The diagonal wavy bands symbolizes the Rhine. The tank turret superimposed on the bend indicates fighting on both sides of the Rhine. The Fleur-de Lis represents services in central Europe.

Fort Knox, Kentucky

Their duties at Fort Knox where to field testing various kinds of tanks and equipment. They assisted in the development of the General Sherman M4A3 Medium Tank. The unit was involved in what was called the "Million Dollar Tank Test". This involved the testing and evaluation of several different tank engines. They tested radial airplane engines, V-type Ford and Chrysler automatic automobile engines. Through there test and compiled data the V-type Ford engine was found to be the best. This tank was produced and was used through out the war.

The unit was sent to Camp Shelby, Mississippi November 2, 1943. There they spent their time training for combat missions. Later they were sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina for more combat training with the 78th Infantry Division. In October of 1944, the 781st was on U.S.S. La Jeunne sailing off to Europe.

Alsace, France

They arrived in Marseille, France and had to wait for there tanks and supplies to arrive after a long delay. In December they were moved inland to Padoux, France where they were attached to the VI Corp of the Seventh Army. After their arrival in Alsace they were split up to three different regiments of the 100th Infantry Division. Company "A" to the 399th, Company "B" to the 398th, Company "C" to the 397th and Company "D" was divided and split up into each regiment.

The 781st was put into action with the 100th Infantry advancing to Bitche just outside the German Lines. They attack a small town of Lemberg. The attack was successful and Lt. William Kaiser received the Silver Star and most of his men the Bronze Star for there actions. Company "A" attack north of Lemberg and several German strong holds. Lt. Donald Crane received a Silver Star and many of his men the Bronze Star for there actions there. The early part of December the 781st was involved in taking high ground, dodging mines, destroying German Flak Wagons and taking prisoners. December 14-21 was the attack on Bitche.
